Dance floor dimensions..

Ok, so like I said it's fairly small, roughly 10 (width) x 12 (depth). I know some people wanted to do troupe performances, and if you had a tight trio you could probably pull it off, but you need to think "within the box" ;)

I wasn't planning on setting time limits. I wanted to start early so that we wouldn't have to. Do you think we should set time limits?

Can it be more like a party? When I used to have these hafla parties with my old troupe run by an original Bal Anat-er (the 70's one), she used to invite musicians and then we would take turns dancing. We won't have musicians, but maybe people can just take turns so everyone has a chance; and then go again for however much time there is. Otherwise it sounds like people are just treating it like a performance. AND THEN amybe we can gently propd people if they have been hogging the stage : )

Well, I'd like for people to be able to do performances.... maybe we should limit it to10 minutes. There will be some students there and I think it would be good practice. I personally am afraid of improv....eeeeek noooooooooooo!

              chicken!
              hee hee hee.
I've seen you improv, I think you're just dandy.

Anyway, it doesn't mean they have to improv, but just can't do a whole "show". Instead they can do a song, then someone else does, then another, etc.

OK... lets set it at a ONE SONG less than 10 MINUTES limit!

Yes... I am extrememly chicken, especially in front of other belly dancers!!

I also thought it might be fun (if time allows after the performances) to do a game where one dancer starts improv-ing, then chooses another dancer to join... the first dancer leads and the new dancer follow.. then the first dancer bows out leaving the chosen dancer to solo until they choose another to duet with ... etc.

The game idea is a very cool thing to do, we ususally do it at the end of class, it's a nice sisterly bonding kind of thing so I'm all for it. As far as performances go, the one song limit no more than 10 minutes long is perfect. I usually don't like to do just one song that is longer than 5 min so I'm cool with that. Once everyone has had a turn we could probably start over with other songs or just have open floor and play some cool music, I can bring all my good cds so we've got a good selection.

Also, is the ceiling relatively high, like arched or vaulted? I want to use my big nasty turkish scimitar and I don't want to end up sticking it the ceiling or something. That would be bad.....

                  I like that idea!

I enjoy dancing/performing for each other a lot, but it would be great to interact more too!

In one of the classes I go to, we dance in a circle and pass around the lead - this kind of relies on knowing the same movements, though, so I don't know if our experience would overlap enough for that to work...

Shahlah- The ceiling is 8' 4". If you put a ding in it with your scimitar, no worries! There already is another big chunk of wall that I have to patch in that room that the plumber left.

This will also be great for sharing music! Mmmmmm.... food, drink, dancing, music, costumes, clothes, games.... I'm really looking forward to this!

Speaking of things we might be bringing, is there any reason I shouldn't bring some snakey dance accompaniment? (Either a ball python or a corn snake or two, not sure yet.)

                        Thanx!
