I was practicing yesterday and my left knee tweeked just doing a 3/4 shimmy with a little kick. I was completely warmed up and stretched out and everything. It's the weirdest thing. I get a sharp shooting pain from my knee to my hip, and occasionally down my shin just lifting my leg or turning out from my thigh at all. And putting weight on it on my toes does it too. Yet, I can shimmy on my feet and walking isn't too bad. Maybe I'll have to devise an entirely different routine like a drum solo or something..... Like I'll have the time for that. I'm so frustrated! But it's bound to be fun anyway!

Tue, November 16, 2004 - 7:01 AMoh Scottie, you better do the sittin' thing so you don't permanently damage yourself and stop your dancing forever!! You will be busy enough hosting don't ya think? I wish I could be there....we are still stuck in FL with no date set for our trip out. Not that FL is a bad place to be, oh no I would not have it any other way!!! I do hate to miss what sounds like a lot of fun though.
Y'all have great time! -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Tue, November 16, 2004 - 6:24 PMMy knee magically fixed itself! I felt like it was something slightly out of place. I did get a good pop from it this morning. Maybe that did it. Anyway, now I have to FINISH my routine and rehearse!!!! Yikes!!!! -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 7:40 AMWell, don't expect a whole lot. I suck, but I guess you gotta start somewhere, right?
Geez, I haven't even finished my routine. Choreography is not something that comes to me easily yet. None of it comes to me easily, for that matter. Lately I've been wondering if I'll ever get it, or if I'm just not cut out for graceful endeavors! -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 8:56 AMTrust me, you will get it! For a while I felt like I didn't even know where to begin with choreography, I had the movements down but I didn't know how to put anything together or even improvise to a song. Now that I've been dancing with the troupe for almost a year I can do it all. Just keep trying, every woman is graceful in her own right! (even though we may drive race cars!) -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 9:49 AMyou are choregraphing something? I'm just showing up and hoping for the best -- I still need to find some music LOL! So, maybe I should get my act together and wear something more than baggy jeans : )
This will be fun! -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 10:32 AMWe're also doing something choreographed :) -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 11:15 AMThen I am definitly not choreographing -- then I have an excuse for my dancing! : ) That and I haven't danced in a year...
Can anyone hum Turkish tunes? -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 11:42 AMMaybe I'll just toss this frustrating routine bit aside and improv, too. Now there's a really scary thought. It's like when I was in school and I'd study really hard and know everything before taking a test, then forget most of it as soon as I got the test... only to remember everything as soon as it was all over.
I am such a chicken! -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 12:45 PMOh I still get terrified but I just listen to the music I'm going to use over and over at work (8 hours a day 5 days a week) until it's like a part of me and then I just dance to how it moves me. The thing that really helps with improv, or freestyle as I've heard it called, is to have a wide range of dance movement techniques and combinations down in your head and muscle memory, then you can just do whatever takes your fancy. It's like racing, when I first started I was so busy driving the car and hearing all these sounds (you know it's loud in there!) that I couldn't concentrate on much else but keeping the car on the track. Once I learned the skills necessary to drive on an asphalt circle track I didn't have to think about it anymore, it was second nature; I was then able to focus on getting to the front. Maybe look at dancing the same way, once the movements become second nature you can better concentrate on what movements to actually use at any given moment.
One of the best things that helped me personally was watching hours and hours of performance videos (over and over of course) and just absorbing what I saw, that helped me get over the "what do I do next" problem that I always had. I realized that for most improv you just string together a bunch of moves with good defined transitions and it turns out great, once I understood that and stopped worrying that I would look too repetitive or stupid I was fine. Let me know if you want to borrow any performance tapes (I have all the IAMED Awards ones plus many others) and I'll bring them with me on Saturday.

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 2:36 PMScottie, I'm impressed that you're even trying to choreograph! I hate that part - I can barely remember my own choreography, let alone anyone else's! As you can probably guess, I will be improvising :-) Maybe you could improv to the piece you were choreographing to - that way you'll already have listened to it a lot and thought of moves you like.
It took a long time for any of this to come naturally to me too, I felt like a dancing stick for years.
Right now, I'm just hoping I'll be there!! I have a nasty cold I thought would be gone by now...

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Thu, November 18, 2004 - 8:18 AMOh Tansy! Is it possible to get sick through the internet? I'm trying to fight it right now. I was feeling wiped out yesterday, started getting a sore throat around noon, and by last night felt like I had been run over by a truck. Dammit!
I've been pounding Airborne, Emergen-C, and gargling with tea tree oil and I am optimistic that it is starting to work. At least this morning my throat feels a little better and my bones don't hurt so much.
I am actually a bit relieved because it explains my mopey attitude. I always get in a slump when I'm about to come down with something. It's kind of like PMS.

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Thu, November 18, 2004 - 9:16 AMOh no! Poor Scottie!!
I know what you mean about feeling cranky before getting sick, I do the same thing (and it always confuses me). I made it through last night without cough medicine, so I'm feeling hopeful today...
Have you tried zinc? It's supposed to be most useful (like actually shortening the cold) for the first 48 hours, though I tend to take it after that too (even though yesterday it made everything smell like bleach - yuk!!) There's a disgusting but effective nasal goo called Zicam, or any lozenges that dissolve in your mouth - apparently letting the stuff stay in your nose/mouth area absobs it where it'll do the most good, or something.
Hope you feel better soon!!! -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Thu, November 18, 2004 - 12:17 PMScottie try gargling with liquid chlorophyll, it usually has mint and comfrey in it and that KILLS a sore throat immediately! It tastes kind of nasty though. Most healthfood stores have it. -

Re: Afraid I may just be sitting on the couch!
Thu, November 18, 2004 - 1:15 PMI'm doing the nasty zinc lozenges. Never tried chlorophyll, but I'm intrigued. I have to say I'm totally sold on Airborne at this point. My throat is not as sore now and my bones are less achey. It's mostly just head congestion and headache now. At this rate I think I should be in OK shape tomorrow. I don't think it's the same nasty sore throat cough thing that my husband had for almost 2 weeks. I think it's more of a flu.
Tansy, I'm glad you're on the rebound. The cough thing that has been going around is bad!
